New Music This Week (w/e 18/05/18)

Goldfrapp feat. Dave Gahan – Ocean

Adding Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan to anything immediately provides extra quality. This is taken from the upcoming deluxe edition of Goldfrapp’s excellent 2017 album Silver Eye, out July 6th

Nine Inch Nails – God Break Down The Door

Trent’s back with a new EP titled Bad Witch, and it’s available from June 22nd. This is what used to be called the ‘single’

Yungblud – 21st Century Liability

Working at my other job as Music Manager for Spin Xtra exposes me to some excellent tracks in the Urban genre. This newie from Yungblud is, as the kids say, ‘Lit AF’

Johnny Marr – Hi Hello

The Marr-stro returns with the second taster of his new album Call The Comet out June 15th. As me ma would say, ‘he never gets any older-looking’

The Beach Boys with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – Fun, Fun, Fun

I’m not usually a fan of these albums that overlay an orchestra over classic hits, but this Beach Boys one looks really good. Brian Wilson’s compositions lend themselves well to the concept. It’s out on June 8th.

James – Hank

As announced by the always-wonderful SuperDeluxeEdition.com, James will release a new album, Living In Extraordinary Times, in August, and this is the lead track

New Album Of The Week:
Parquet Courts – Wide Awake!

Parquet Courts have enlisted the help of Danger Mouse for production duties on this, their sixth album. Cue swagger injection. The title track is our favourite

Reissue Of The Week:
Various Artists – Island Reggae

Sixty tracks over three CDs. This is a top-notch collection, and an excellent primer for those wishing to dip their toe into the world of reggae music. Tracks include Toots & The Maytals’ ‘Funky Kingston’, Jimmy Cliff’s ‘The Harder They Come’, copious Marley, and one of the genre’s underappreciated gems, Sophia George’s ‘Girlie Girlie’
