Loads of great new music released over the past 7 days. Check it out:
Prince – Electric Intercourse
Thought by Prince scholars to only ever have existed in live form, a studio recording of ‘Electric Intercourse’ is one of the rarities included in the upcoming Purple Rain deluxe edition. Synth drums, piano, and that voice, is fine falsetto. As you’d imagine, many of the bonus tracks on the reissue are about ridin’, and the set is out on June 23rd
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit – Cumberland Gap
Some more uptempo Americana from the former Drive-By Trucker, this is taken from his forthcoming album The Nashville Sound, out June 16th. Ah, the Heartland.
HAIM – Right Now
First new music in 4 years from the Haim sisters, this is from their second album Something To Tell You, release date TBC
Chuck Berry – Wonderful Woman
Hugely influential and now-dead Uncle Disgusting releases first new album in 38 years, out June 9th. No reinventing the wheel here, probably cos he invented it in the first place
Ride – All I Want
Ride don’t like Theresa May. Not one bit. New album Weather Diaries out June 16th
The Beatles -Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Take 9 And Speech)
Previously unreleased outtake from the album sessions, taken from the deluxe edition out May 26th. Includes much Fab noodling and chatter at the end.
Blondie – Fragments
Debbie, Chris, Clem and Co. haven’t sounded this vital in years. New album Pollinator out next Friday, and they support the mighty Phil Collins at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on June 25th
Roger Waters – Smell The Roses
Suitably menacing as always, this is a great track from the de-Floyd-ed grumpster. His new album Is This The Life We Really Want? will be with us on June 2nd
Little Steven and The Disciples Of Soul – Soulfire
Everyone’s favourite bandana’d sideman returns in solo guise. Album of the same name due May 19th
PJ Harvey – A Dog Called Money/I’ll Be Waiting
Well this is unexpected! Both sides of a new 7″ vinyl single from Her Peejesty. 1000 copies, on sale throughout her current tour
Gavin Glass – Break Your Daddy’s Heart
First taster of Dubliner Glass’s new album Opus Pocus. Fine Americana from a fine talent
The War On Drugs – Thinking Of A Place
Yusssss! Recorded for and released on Record Store Day. Bodes very well for the new album
New Album Of The Week:
Gorillaz – Humanz
More guests than a U2 Dublin show, and an album we thought we’d never get. When does Albarn ever sleep?
Reissue Of The Week:
Johnny Cash At San Quentin
If you don’t have this album in your collection in some format or another, hang your head in shame! Sony Legacy have just reissued it as a 2CD “Vinyl Replica” edition. In otherwords, imagine if a vinyl album was 5 inches in diameter and made of Plastic, and played in a CD player. Yes, it’s a CD. This version has bonus tracks, and is “packaged in a gatefold digi-pack with black polycarbonate discs (to mimic the vinyl look) and accompanying booklet”, according to Amazon.co.uk. Music essential, whether it’s this reissue or a battered 48-year-old vinyl copy.
That should be enough to keep you going! Enjoy the music.
