Only two and a half weeks until Record Store Day 2017.  If you’ve not seen the full list of exclusive releases yet, it’s here

Having digested the list over the past couple of weeks, here’s the first set of the RockYouLike must-buys on the day

Allen Toussaint – The Allen Toussaint Collection

Originally released on CD back in 1991, this double vinyl album includes 16 of the master’s recordings for the Reprise and Nonesuch labels. Side 4 is an etching.  Songs include “From A Whisper To A Scream”, “Country John”, “Last Train” and “Southern Nights”

Allen Toussaint

Ben Folds & W.A.S.O. – Live In Perth

Ther 21st Century Elton John backed by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 2005.  First time on vinyl, it’s a double, and includes songs such as “Zak And Sara”, “Annie Waits”, “Brick”, “Not The Same”, and “The Luckiest”.  The anecdote before “Steven’s Last Night In Town” is a corker too.

The Cars – Live at The Agora 1978

This is a previously unreleased live show over 2 vinyl LPs, with side 4 being an etching by drummer David Robinson.  Songs featured include “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “Just What I Needed”, “Moving In Stereo” and “All Mixed Up”

The Cure – Acoustic Hits

For the 2-disc edition of their Greatest Hits album back in 2001, The Cure went into the studio and knocked out acoustic versions of those hits.  Strictly limited edition at the time, it’s never been released on vinyl.  This is a double LP picture disc, including “Boys Don’t Cry”, “Just Like Heaven”, “Close To Me”, “The Walk”, and “A Forest”.  Expect this to sell out fast

David Bowie – Various Releases

We’ve covered these previously, here

Deee-Lite – Groove Is In The Heart

Available on 12″ pink vinyl, who doesn’t love this song?

Dennis Wilson – Bambu (The Caribou Sessions)

Bootlegged for years, and finally released as bonus tracks on the deluxe reissue of Dennis’ Pacific Ocean Blue album in 2008.  This is a new 2LP set on coloured vinyl with new liner notes by Ken Sharp.  The cover looks beautiful, but the music’s even more so.

Iggy Pop – Post Pop Depression Live At The Royal Albert Hall

On the back of his best album in ages, Iggy undertook a tour, recording this gig in London. Originally released on CD last year, this issue runs over 4 LPs in a book-style gatefold format with a booklet of exclusive photos.  He really shouldn’t be sounding this great.  Songs include “Lust For Life”, “Sister Midnight”, “Break Into Your Heart” and “China Girl”

Part 2 coming soon.  In the meantime, Record Store Day Ireland has an official webpage, so check them out here for a list of releases, participating stores, and more
